Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement is generally a painful condition of the knee, the reason can be arthritis, old age, degeneration or wear and tear of the cartilage. The conditions worsens to a greater extent in patients resulting to immobility or excruciating pain. Total knee replacement surgery is considered for such patients where the damaged cartilage or bones from the joint are replaced with implants (metallic prosthesis) and the knee is saved from further damage.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgeries:

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

Surgery involves the replacement one side(unilateral) or both sides(bilateral) of the knee joint. It is the most common procedure nowadays. This surgery involves the removal of the affected bones and cartilages from the joint and is replaced by the metallic implants and thereby restoring the normal function of the knee. The individual will have almost negligible or no pain with a better mobility post-surgery.

Partial Knee Replacement (UKR)

Partial replacement replaces only one side of the knee joint and only the damaged portion of one knee is removed and a metallic implant is placed. This surgery is known as ‘Unicondylar knee replacement’ and it involves very less incision or cut on the knee. The damaged portion of the knee is replaced so the bone loss is less. The cut is minimal and so the blood loss is also very less and ensuring faster recovery.
